Inspired by a hit 80’s TV show, The Beer Hunter, Matt Houghton cut his teeth making homebrew and travelling the world sampling different beers. Once back home in Australia, Matt levelled up by studying brewing at University, and whilst there met his future wife and business partner.
After graduating, and growing increasingly displeased with the absence of decent beers in Australia at the time, Matt and Andrea founded Boatrocker Brewers. Using a recipe for Pale Ale and Pilsner, they started gypsy brewing and selling beers out of Matt’s car. After receiving numerous international awards for their brews, Boatrocker quickly outgrew its gypsy brewing roots.
In 2012 Matt and Andrea bought a property and commenced the long and complicated journey to build their own brewery. As part of this, 60 wine barrels were acquired, resulting in Australia’s first, and now largest, barrel-ageing brewery.
Not one to rest on his laurels, Matt recently acquired a gin distillery to continue creating new and innovative drinks.
Boatrocker is one of the pre-eminent craft breweries in Australia, and we’re thrilled to have them in the ARVO stable. Check out their amazing core range and keep an eye out for the extremely hard-to-get limited release brews!
